The Burnley Bridge, located in the village of Burnley on County Road 29, approximately 190 meters south of Noonan Road, has served the community since its construction in 1950. Spanning Burnley Creek with a north-south orientation, the bridge has provided a vital connection for residents and visitors alike. However, after more than 70 years of use, ongoing monitoring and assessments have identified the need for major rehabilitation, however, given the costs and the need to meet current and future transportation demands, a full replacement is considered the most feasible solution. To address these challenges and ensure the bridge continues to meet the needs of the community, Northumberland County has initiated a comprehensive replacement project to enhance safety and bring the bridge up to modern standards.

Proposed changes and improvements

The Burnley Bridge replacement project will replace the existing single-lane bridge with a modernized two-lane concrete rigid frame bridge to better accommodate current and future traffic needs. The upgraded design will enhance traffic flow and safety, ensuring the bridge meets current standards. As part of this project, a speed reduction in the vicinity of the bridge will also be permanently implemented, aligning with updated road design standards to improve safety for all users.

The reconstruction project is anticipated to be exempt from the Environmental Assessment Act requirements, as the bridge does not have any cultural heritage value and seeks only to modernize the bridge’s capacity. During the construction period in the summer of 2025, the bridge will be closed for approximately four to six months. The County will work to minimize disruptions by providing advance notice and clear detour routes.

Northumberland County maintains a network of nearly 500 kilometers of roadways across almost 3,000 square kilometers, as well as over 100 bridges and culverts. To view the current condition status of the many bridges and culverts in the County, please visit the performance dashboard.

Public Information Session

A public information session was held on December 11, where residents were able to learn about the project, review designs, ask questions, and share feedback.
